2016-2017 Curriculum... and what is Vuja De?

Developing visual art curriculum around a centralized theme has allowed me to develop meaningful, in-depth artmaking experiences that are interconnected and continuously build upon previous knowledge throughout the school year.

What is the theme for the 2016-2017 school year?

How To Be an Explorer!

"Kids are 71% less involved in outdoor activities now than they were ten years ago" (Dr. Stuart Brown, founding director of the National Institute for Play).

Inspired by Keri Smith's book, How to Be an Explorer of the World, I have developed a curriculum packed with experiences that will turn Chapman's students into explorers of their surroundings and connect them with their environment in ways they have never experienced before.

Through this curriculum, students will become very familiar with a concept that many believe to be a key to becoming a more creative, innovative thinker; Vuja De.  No, I do not mean Deja Vu! Vuja De, a concept from renowned author and professor at Stanford University, means being in a situation or environment that is very familiar, but seeing it in a completely new way!
